A soft exosuit from the team at Harvard University assists the wearer with heavy loads and other tasks without hampering movement.
In development for two years, the suit replaces the hard metal materials of previous versions with soft textiles. It is made up of a waist belt, two pieces that fit on the thigh and two calf straps attached by cables to a pair of motors on a backpack. The suit will automatically detect when the wear begins to walk, stiffening the fabric to ease the weight on the joints and take the load off the body.
