A new soft-bodied robot uses internal explosions to leap as high as 30 times its height.
Developed by Whiteside’s Research Group of Harvard, the soft, three-legged robot is embedded with pneumatic networks filled with methane and oxygen. When the gases are triggered by electricity, the resulting explosion thrusts the bot into the air. The thrust is much more powerful than what has been achieved by air alone.
The high-jumping bot technology could have applications as a rescue robot able to leap to the site of trouble.
