Soft Robots Take Shape Magnetically

Soft Robots Take Shape Magnetically
Aug-06-19
Soft robots controlled by light and magnetism can be reconfigured on command and then locked into the specified shape.

The robots are made up of a polymer embedded with magnetic iron particles which will maintain its form in normal conditions. However, exposure to LED will cause the material to become pliable, allowing it to be reshaped using a magnetic field and then ‘locked into place’ by removing the light. The soft robotic material can be reshaped indefinitely, and could be used to form tools such as grabbers and cantilevers that can open and close on demand.
