Soft Valve for Softer Robotics

Soft Valve for Softer Robotics
Dec-09-18
A soft robotic valve could give soft robotics an even gentler touch.

While soft robotics have been in development for some time, they have typically relied on hard, pneumatic devices to propel their flexible bodies and arms. As an alternative, a team from Harvard created a soft valve made up of a cylinder separated into two chambers by a silicon membrane. The membrane will pop up when the lower chamber is pressurized, triggering a tube inside the corresponding chamber to ‘kink' and turning the valve off or on.
