The winning team in this year’s Solar Decathlon has been announced—with Team Austria taking the award for its open floor plan and privacy-screening curtain design.

The house, called LISI (Living Inspired by Sustainable Innovation), was inspired by the forested regions of Austria. Made of 93 percent timber, the house features a fully opened interior living area and plenty of deck space for outdoor living. The open plan allows cooling breezes to flow through the home and played a role in the development of the most unusual aspect of the design: its Teflon fabric curtain. The curtain provides UV protection, some weather-proofing and lets the home owners create a greater sense of privacy, when desired.

Other features of the award-winning design include an internal core that can be closed off in winter, a sub-floor ventilation system and a system for recovering heat energy from shower water run-off.
