Solar-Powered Electronic Skin

Solar-Powered Electronic Skin
Feb-15-19
An electronic skin able to gather and store solar power could pave the way to solar-powered prosthetics and wearable electronics.

Developed by a team from the University of Glasgow, the electronic skin consists of layers of graphene and polyurethane that form a flexible supercapacitor only one carbon atom thick. The material can store energy, which is generated by the graphene layer as it converts sunlight to electricity. In tests by the team, the system was able to power an array of 84 LEDs as well as the high-torque motors of a prosthetic hand.
