A new hydrogel water purification system can even make the salty water of the dead sea drinkable.
Developed by a team from the University of Texas Austin, the system features a hydrogel that is hydrophilic as well as semiconducting. The solar-powered system creates water vapor, which is then moved into a condenser that harvests the fresh water while removing contaminants. The hydrogel-based system is also more affordable and uses less power than current options.
