Solar Powered Lasers Provide Asteroid Protection

Solar Powered Lasers Provide Asteroid Protection
Feb-18-13
The recent space rock events have prompted researchers to work harder on new methods for defending the earth from such threats with their newest proposal—solar-powered lasers.

The concept, called Directed Energy Solar Targeting of Asteroids and Exploration (DE-STAR) consists of an orbiting system able to funnel solar power into a system of laser beams. The beams would be powerful enough to destroy small asteroids and nudge larger ones onto a different, safer path for Earth. According to the developers, DE-STAR could also be used to analyze an asteroid’s composition, enabling rare-element mining.

The system is based on current technology, and only needs to be scaled up to be practical for use in asteroid and meteor deflection and destruction.
