SolidEnergy Creates Safer EV Battery

SolidEnergy Creates Safer EV Battery
Dec-02-13
The SolidEnergy company has developed a way to make EV batteries both safer and more affordable, potentially bridging one more gap between consumers and electric cars.

The team created the more efficient battery by replacing the graphite electrode of conventional lithium-ion batteries with an electrode made of high-energy lithium metal. This replacement in itself is not new, but the technique had not previously been pursued because the metal will tend to cause short circuits and fires. To prevent the batteries from starting fires, the team also developed a two-part electrolyte, known as an ionic liquid type, which is not flammable.

Rather than sell completed batteries, SolidEnergy plans to make the battery materials available to battery manufacturers.
