Sorting Cells by Sound

Sorting Cells by Sound
Oct-06-12
The new, prototype device that uses sound to sort cells could lead to a new generation of tiny, medical analytical devices.

Developed by researchers at Pennsylvania State University, the dime-sized device uses two sound waves that direct the path of a continuous flow of cells, organizing the flow into five or more channels. Since the current limit is two channels in one step, the new device could allow for more cells to be analyzed at the same time, opening the door for smaller, more efficient and less expensive devices. As an additional bonus, sound waves are gentler to cells than traditional sorting methods.
