Sound Spotlights from Metamaterials

Sound Spotlights from Metamaterials
May-09-19
A careful deployment of acoustic metamaterials can create a sound spotlight targeted to specific areas.

The novel dynamic metamaterial device was created by teams from the universities of Bristol and Sussex using common materials like wood, glass and plastics. These materials were shaped into blocks that can then be arranged to create acoustic lenses, such as zoom-like Vari-Sound lens and an acoustic collimator that transmits a narrow beam.

The technology could have an array of applications including detecting machinery problems, identifying specific sounds (such as intruder vs. pet), and ensuring each audience member hears the truest rendition of the performance.
