Space grade solar cells are being used on earth, tracking the sun and producing almost twice the power of traditional solar arrays while also taking up less space on land.
Developed by NREL, the Amonix 7700 Concentrated Photovoltaic (or CPV) generator uses inexpensive Fresnel lenses to increase the sun's concentration on the cells by 500 times. The concentrated solar density is then converted to energy at a 26% efficiency, which is twice that of conventional solar panels in the field.
Because each panel is mounted on a pole, the new technology could lessen the impact of solar fields on the land, and the greater ease of transport and installation helps to lower the cost of logistics.
