A new spacesuit able to navigate to the wearer’s home ship could help bring disoriented space-walking astronauts back to safety.
Developed by a team at Draper, who recently applied for a patent, the self-returning device would rely on sensors able to track the wearer’s motion and location as it relates to the spacecraft. Star-tracking or vision-aided sensors would take the place of GPS, with redundant systems in place for greater security. The Draper team is hoping to develop a fully autonomous system able to trigger the thruster itself, though a manual, navigation-aided system may be the best solution.
