Spider Silk Could Heal Damaged Nerves

Spider Silk Could Heal Damaged Nerves
Jul-29-17
Trellises made of spider silk could provide a new way to repair nerve damage.

Developed by a team from the Medical University of Vienna, the scaffold is made from the silk of the golden orb-weaver spider, which is extremely elastic and tear resistant, as well as waterproof and antibacterial.

The silk was used to build a sort of “rose trellis” to bridge the gaps in damaged nerves, giving the new nerve fibers a structure as they grow to reconnect the nerve endings. The team hopes to eventually be able to test the silk in human trials, where it may even have applications in treating neurological diseases.
