SpiderSense Suit Warns of Unseen Objects

SpiderSense Suit Warns of Unseen Objects
Feb-26-13
Become the next super hero of your neighborhood with SpiderSense suit, which vibrates to signal the distances of nearby objects (and sneaky villains).

Developed by Victor Mateevitsi of the University of Illinois, the suit features modules of microphones that send out and detect ultrasonic reflections from objects in the environment. As the microphones detect a person or thing moving closer to the wearer, the information is relayed to an array of small, robotic arms embedded in the suit. The arms then respond by exerting pressure on the side of body from which the object was detected, increasing the pressure as the object nears.

Besides outfitting fledging crime-fighters, Mateevitsi believes the suit could be used by cyclists to help increase their traffic awareness or by the visually impaired to assist in navigating unfamiliar environments.
