SpiroCall Monitors Lung Function with a Phone Call

SpiroCall Monitors Lung Function with a Phone Call
May-05-16
The SpiroCall system lets people monitor their lung function with a phone call—no smartphone required.

Many people around the world are not able to afford the typical spirometers used to measure lung function. And while smartphone apps have become more available, many of these same people are still using old flip-phones, or even landlines.

To make health resources more accessible to remote and under served populations, the team from the University of Washington created the SpiroCall, which can measure lung function over the phone. To use the system, the patient calls the specified 1-800 number, then exhales hard and fast. The phone’s microphone will send information on the sound and pressure of the exhalation to a central server, which processes the data and relays the information to the patient.
