Springy Fiber Helps Repair Heart Tissue

Springy Fiber Helps Repair Heart Tissue
Sep-29-13
Researchers have developed a new, spring-like fiber that could help to repair the heart in a more lasting and functional way.

The inspiration for the new, curly fiber was born when the researchers identified spiral-shaped collagen fibers in the extracellular matrix of rat hearts. The springy fiber, developed by a team at Tel Aviv University, was created using electrospinning techniques. When heart tissue was grown by seeding the curly fibers with cardiac cells, the new tissue was found to outperform tissue grown on conventional, straight fibers, contracting with greater force and less mechanical resistance.
