Stabilizing Ships with Interior Waves

Stabilizing Ships with Interior Waves
Sep-09-13
In order to stabilize itself on the waves, the Offshore Accommodation Vessel will create its own waves within huge, water-filled tanks.

Designed to accommodate offshore oil rig workers, the ship will feature U-shaped tanks (U-tanks) built into the sides and bottom of its hull. The tanks will be fitted with air valves at the top, which will partially control the water motion so that the water moves in an opposing phase to the wave forces on the hull. The Offshore Accommodation Vessel will also be equipped with thrusters that rotate independently to keep the ship in position relative to the oil rig, making it easier for workers to commute back and forth.

The ship is being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea under contract for Østensjø.
