Star-Shaped Lyndra Capsule Releases Drugs Over Time

Star-Shaped Lyndra Capsule Releases Drugs Over Time
Nov-18-18
The Lyndra multi-dose capsule can deliver an array of medications over time, reducing the number of individual pills a person needs to take.

Created by a team at MIT along with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the star-shaped capsule is now being developed by the spin-off Lyndra Therapeutics. The capsule features six polymer arms held together by an elastic core and filled with medication. The arms fold inward so the capsule can be easily swallowed, and then will open to keep the capsule from moving through the digestive tract as the cargo of medication is released over time.

In tests, the capsule successfully delivered a week’s dose of medication with little side effects. According to Lyndra co-founder Giovanni Traverso, "This paves the way for studying the controlled, steady delivery of drugs for schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease and many other diseases.”
