Stealth Sheet Fools Infrared

Stealth Sheet Fools Infrared
Jun-25-18
A new ultrathin, lightweight stealth sheet uses black silicon to hide heat signatures.

Developed by the team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the silicon-based material can absorb about 94 percent of infrared light, including the wavelengths given off by the human body. Because the sheet is so thin and lightweight, it makes a promising alternative to the heavier options like metal armor or thermal blankets. The team also embedded electronic heating elements in the sheet, which enables the material to present a false heat signature and look like a different object under an infrared camera.
