Steam Stripping Cleans Smelly Plastics for Recycling

Plastic is a common container for food and other odiferous products, which can become absorbed by the material’s polymeric matrix and create an unpleasant smell—reducing the material’s recyclability. To help keep plastic out of landfills, a team from the University of Alicante created a process that involves pre-conditioning and crushing the sorted plastic, washing it with a ‘special soap,’ and subjecting the material to steam stripping (steam distillation) to remove the odors.
