Steerable Bougie Helps Patients Breathe Easier

Steerable Bougie Helps Patients Breathe Easier
Dec-31-14
A new steerable endotracheal bougie can help prevent brain damage by bending to a precise shape that makes it easier for doctors to insert breathing tubes.

Conventional bougies—flexible rods that establish a route for the breathing tube to travel over—usually have be removed and reshaped during insertion. To speed the process, a team at Nottingham Trent University created an updated version of the tool by embedding Flexinol, a shape memory alloy, in two sides of a disposable casing for the bougie. Applying a current to one wire will cause it to shorten and trigger the bougie to bend in that direction, allowing doctors to steer the device using a detachable controller.
