Storing Data on Cassette Tapes

Storing Data on Cassette Tapes
Oct-20-12
Researchers are reaching to the past to find ways to save data for the future—by storing the information on cassette tapes.

The prototype data storage cassettes, currently being developed by IBM and Fujifilm, are being created by using magnetic tape that has been coated in barium ferrite. They are able to hold up large amounts of information while using much less power than traditional hard drives, which tend to remain in the power-on position even when the data is not being read. The cassette tapes are also very compact, with the prototype design from IBM measuring only 10cm x 10cm x 2cm while still holding 35 terabytes of data.
