Storing Solar Power in Sand

Storing Solar Power in Sand
Aug-10-16
The Sandstock technology offers a new way to harness solar energy by storing it in sand to provide electricity at night.

Developed by a team from the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, the new process involves heating grains of sand with solar energy as they fall from one container to a heated basin below. The heated sand, which is stored in the lower container, would be used to provide energy during peak hours or at night, and the cooled sand can then be returned to the upper basin to continue the cycle.
