Strawberry-Picking Rubion Robot Has the Soft Touch

Jul-08-19 The Rubion robot by Octinion relies on photonic sensors and a unique soft-touch gripper to select and pick ripe strawberries as carefully as a human.

Designed to work with raised strawberry beds, the Rubion is equipped with photonic sensors that detect the light signatures given off by a ripe strawberry and a patented ‘soft-touch gripper’ that gently grasps the berry from below. The Rubion plucks the strawberry much like a human would, without needing to burn or cut the stem and without damaging the fruit.

According to the team, it would take fourteen Rubion robots less than seven days to pick and package all the strawberries needed for Wilmbledon.
