3D, stretchable electronics that can be twisted and stacked could open the door to multi-functional wearable electronics.
Basing their design on standard, rigid printed circuit boards, which get their functionality from their many layers, researchers from the University of California San Diego developed a stretchable electronic patch made of four stacked layers. The flexible system, which has already been tested as a skin-worn patch able to monitor an array of vital signs, could take stretchable electronics to the next generation, with applications for both humans and robotics.
