Stronger Membranes Separate by Size

Stronger Membranes Separate by Size
Jul-22-19
Metal-oxide infused membranes offer an affordable option for separating chemicals during manufacturing.

Rather than relying on current energy-intensive, thermally-driven systems, the membrane from the team at Georgia Tech separates molecules by size. Although this is not a new technology, current plastic-based membranes used for this task were not able to withstand the chemicals they were separating. The new membrane, however, is made more robust with the infusion of a metal oxide network that allows the material to last for months, even in harsh environments.
