The copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) SUN2 solar panels cost more than the traditional silicon version, but that price is offset by the fact that the panels are easier to install and require no specialized racks. The panels are also manufactured with fewer chemicals, and can operate efficiently in low light and high temperatures—an aspect the team claims allows the panels to harvest ten percent more energy than their silicon counterparts.
