Super-human Red Blood Cells Ferry Drugs Past Defenses

Super-human Red Blood Cells Ferry Drugs Past Defenses
Jan-19-20
Super-human red blood cells filled with medication could be used to transport drugs to specific targets in the body.

The super-human cells were developed by a team from McMaster University, who created a way to replace the contents of a red blood cell with a chosen drug molecule. The cell’s outer wall is also modified to have a sticky surface, which allows the otherwise normal-looking cell to slip past the body’s defenses and attach more easily to specific tissues or bacteria.

According to Sebastian Himbert, lead author of the study, “We have combined synthetic material with biological material and created a new structure, which has never been done before in this way.”
