Surgery in a Pill Could Help Treat Diabetes

Surgery in a Pill Could Help Treat Diabetes
Jun-14-18
An ingestible pill that mimics the effects of weight loss surgery could help patients struggling with both diabetes and obesity.

The pill works by coating the lining of the small intestine temporarily, which alters nutrient absorption and lowers blood glucose response after a meal. When tested on rats, the oral agent caused a reduction of glucose response by 47 percent, with the effect ending after about three hours.

According to the team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the pill could offer a treatment for type 2 diabetes by mimicking the effects of bariatric surgery, and could also provide a new method for targeted drug delivery in the gastrointestinal tract.
