Sustainable Motor Eliminates Need for Rare Earth Magnets

Sustainable Motor Eliminates Need for Rare Earth Magnets
May-23-18
A new motor from Advanced Electric Machines eliminates rare earth magnets to earn the title of the most sustainable motor in the world.

Designed for use in hybrid and electric vehicles, the High-Density Switched Reluctance Machine (HDSRM) motor is not made using rare earth magnets—a common material in most other electric motors. Instead, the AEM technology is based on a switched reluctance motor, which delivers power to the stator instead of the rotor. The motor incorporates an off-the-shelf inverter, aluminum windings instead of copper, and can be cooled by the same coolant used in internal combustion engines.

The changes in materials, such as using aluminum instead of copper and eliminating rare earth magnets, enable the motor to be recycled much more easily.
