Synthetic Apiary Breeds Bees in Perpetual Spring

Synthetic Apiary Breeds Bees in Perpetual Spring
Oct-23-16
An innovative new synthetic apiary from the MIT Media Lab could let honeybees live year-round in a perpetual spring.

Designed to help reduce the loss of bee colonies, the Synthetic Apiary was created to explore the option of raising bees all year, in all seasons. The space was carefully crafted to provide an environment that closely resembles spring—including humidity and light—and the bees are fed sugared water and synthetic pollen.

In tests, the Queen beer has successfully laid eggs in the Synthetic Apiary, which the team states is “a first demonstration of sustainable life in a completely synthetic apiary.”
