A synthetic tongue able to identify different whiskeys could offer a quick way to tell counterfeit versions from the real thing.
The synthetic tongue relies on a collection of twenty-two different glowing polymer dyes. When the dye comes in contact with a sample of whiskey, its fluorescence will alter based on the liquor’s chemical composition, or “flavor profile.” These slight alterations can then be used to create a sort of fingerprint for a particular whiskey that can be used to identify brands and detect counterfeits.
