TBIcheck Detects Brain Injury in a Drop of Blood

TBIcheck Detects Brain Injury in a Drop of Blood
Jul-31-18
The small TBIcheck device can detect a concussion from a single drop of blood.

Currently, checking a patient for a traumatic brain injury (TBI) involves a CT scan and exposure to radiation. To offer a simpler, on-the-spot test, the team from the University of Geneva developed a blood test able to detect the presence of H-FABP, a protein known to be a reliable sign of brain injury. The TBIcheck can determine the levels of H-FABP in the sample in just ten minutes in the field, indicating whether a follow-up CT scan is necessary or if no injury has occurred.
