Researchers have developed a design for telescoping robots that could allow them to collapse and deploy as needed.
The robots, still in the prototype phase, are based on curved circular cross sections that are able to rotate and add a 3D twist to 2D shapes. Using their specialized algorithm, the team created several 3D-printed prototypes, including a tent-like shelter and a reconfigurable arm.
The Carnegie Mellon team believes the telescoping robots could have applications in search and rescue, such as a robotic arm able to expand over obstacles.
