Therepi Delivers Medication Directly to the Heart

Therepi Delivers Medication Directly to the Heart
Jun-16-18
The Therepi device attaches to the heart to deliver medication directly to the diseased tissue.

When a heart is damaged by a heart attack, medications can be used to help reduce the amount of scar tissue. However, that medication has traditionally been delivered in the form of an injection to the body, causing potential side effects, or to the heart itself—requiring surgery.

As a safer, less invasive alternative, a team of scientists created the Therepi, which is made up of a thin tube with a small reservoir that is sutured to the heart. The tube extends through the body and out of a small opening in the skin, allowing doses of medication to be pumped into the reservoir, where it is released gradually into the tissue.
