Tiny Blood Monitoring Device Improves Medical Care

Tiny Blood Monitoring Device Improves Medical Care
Oct-25-15
Using 3D printing, researchers have created a tiny device able to monitor blood levels that is much intrusive than the system currently in place.

Created by a ream from EPFL’s Integrated Systems Laboratory, the device is equipped with integrated biosensors able to detect an array of substances in blood and transmit the data in real time via Bluetooth. About the size of a pack of gum, the device can be connected to the existing drainage tube attached to the patient, where it will monitor glucose, lactate and bilirubin levels, as well as the amount of calcium and potassium ions in the blood.

The prototype has already been tested on mice, and human trials are in discussion.
