Tiny Pipe Organ Improves Medical Imaging

Tiny Pipe Organ Improves Medical Imaging
Nov-09-18
A tiny, 3D-printed pipe organ could help improve the quality of medical images.

The miniature pipe organ was created by a team at the University of Strathclyde with the intent of improving the images delivered by ultrasound devices. According to the team, current scanners are limited by their range of frequencies, while a wide bandwidth ultrasound system would offer much more imaging detail. To that end, the tiny pipe organ—with its range of pipe sizes—could enable these scanners to operate across a broad range of frequencies to deliver higher image resolution.

The technology is still in the early stages, but the team believes it could have applications ranging beyond medical imaging to hearing aids and non-destructive safety testing.
