Microscopic 3D-printed swimming donuts mimic biological behavior to deliver drugs inside the body.
The disk-shaped microswimmers, called tori, are coated with nickel and platinum. The nickel allows the bots to be controlled by a magnetic field, while the platinum reacts with the hydrogen peroxide that currently is used as the fuel. The microswimmers can be controlled to transport drugs within the body, perform tissue manipulation, and even stir samples in the miniature labs-on-a-chip.
