Tiny Thermometer Made of DNA

Tiny Thermometer Made of DNA
Apr-28-16
A tiny thermometer made from DNA could offer a new tool for insight into the nanoscale workings of the human body.

Created by a team from the University of Montreal, the thermometer is 20,000 times smaller than a human hair, and based on past research that shows that DNA molecules will unfold when heated. Using their knowledge of the nucleotides’ interactions, the team developed structures made out of four different nucleotides that will fold or unfold when triggered by specific temperatures. An optical reporter in the structure will create a detectable signal when the specified temperature has been reached.
