Researchers have created titanium nanoparticle mats able to purify water with UV light.
Developed by a team from Rice University, the mats consist of hydrophobic polymer fibers embedded with titanium dioxide nanoparticles that will repel water while also binding to pollutants. Exposing the mats to UV light will trigger the release of a reactive oxygen species, destroying the pollutants while requiring much less energy than other water purifying technologies.
Image: Rice University and NEWT - A mat, top left, is immersed in water with methylene blue as a contaminant. The contaminant is then absorbed at top right by the mat and, in the bottom images, destroyed by exposure to light. The mat is then ready for reuse.
