A bio-resin made from tomato waste could help to improve the quality and safety of metal cans while also decreasing the use of plastic-made food containers.
The tomato resin is being developed as part of the BIOCOPAC project, which was formed to find a way to replace the toxic BPA-filled liner used to keep cans intact. The water-repellent, waxy bio-resin is found in the peel of tomato plants, as well as in wall of other plant cells. Currently, the team is working on cost-effective, bio-friendly ways to extract and optimize the material.
The research is based on a patent from the 1940s that was developed by the leaders of the project SSICA (Stazione Sperimentale per l'Industria delle Conserve Alimentari).
