Toxic Nanoparticles Target Bacteria

Toxic Nanoparticles Target Bacteria
Jul-15-17
Toxic silver nanoparticles coated with antibiotics could provide a way to fight drug-resistant bacteria.

The nanoantibiotic is made up of silver-silica nanoparticles that are usually toxic to the body. However, the team coated the nanoparticles with ampicillin, which renders them harmless to the body’s cells while still allowing the particles to target the bacteria.

In tests, the coated nanoparticles were able to destroy a drug-resistant strain of E. coli.
