Training Fitness Trackers to Recognize Cheating

Training Fitness Trackers to Recognize Cheating
Jan-25-16
Researchers have created a smart fitness tracker that can’t be fooled into recording activity when there is none.

Though the first thought may be, "Why get a fitness tracker in the first place if you plan to trick it," many insurance companies and health care providers use the data from such trackers to offer lower rates and monitor patient compliance. With this in mind, a team from Northwestern Medicine and Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) designed a training program for trackers that allows them tell the difference between the required activity (going on a walk) and a cheating attempt (simply shaking the smartphone.)

In tests, the “trained” smartphones were able to recognize authentic fitness activity with up to an 84 percent accuracy.
