Transport Bike is Equipped with a Trunk

Transport Bike is Equipped with a Trunk
Nov-02-13
Designed specifically to appeal to urban commuters, the Transport bicycle features a trunk on its hubless, front wheel.

The bike was developed during a studio course in bike design, and was inspired by the fact that, despite the available storage solutions for bikes, such as panniers, most riders tended to prefer backpacks—even though they aren’t particularly comfortable. The team was inspired to use the negative space of hubless wheels to support a compartment much like a trunk, where the rider could store their belongings or backpack. The front wheel is made up of a large, round frame which stays in place while the tire rotates around it on six bearings. This allows the frame to function as the axle while the center of the wheel can be fitted with an open compartment, creating the trunk.

According to the developers, loading the front wheel with extra weight does not significantly affect the Transport’s handling. However, lack of funds has prevented the team from creating a prototype that can actually be ridden.
