A new prosthetic foot from the team at Stanford University tackles tough terrain with a unique tripod design.
Designed by a team from Stanford Bio-X, the experimental design was created to help encourage independence as well as mobility. The prosthetic is equipped with an accelerometer, pressure sensors, and a heel/toe tripod design able to flex independently to maintain contact with the ground.
In a unique design twist, the team first built an emulator tripod foot, rather than the full prosthesis, that could be tested via a computer system to see how it responds to various terrain. So far, trials with volunteers have been promising.
