Truck-Mounted Capsule Captures CO2 Emissions

Truck-Mounted Capsule Captures CO2 Emissions
Dec-27-19
A new technology from EPFL captures CO2 from vehicle exhaust for reuse as a conventional fuel while reducing emissions up to 90 percent.

Although there is much interest in capturing the CO2 from large industries, vehicles have not benefitted from the same attention. To help fill that gap, the team from EPFL developed a technology that involves cooling the vehicle’s gases in the fumes pipe, isolating the CO2 with a specialized metal-organic systems adsorbent, and using the heat from the vehicle’s engine to compress the CO2 into a liquid. That liquid is then stored in a tank on the vehicle for reuse as conventional fuel.

Accordign to the team, the capsule in which the process takes place measures about six feet on its longest side, and the combined weight of the capsule and tank would make up only about 7 percent of the vehicle’s payload.
