The CLARITY technique turns bones transparent, making it easier for researchers to study bone composition and develop better medications.
Typically, observing the cellular structure of bone involves taking very thin slices, which can damage the bone edges. To offer a simpler—and less damaging—option, the team from Caltech have turned to the CLARITY technique. This technique, now evolved from use on soft tissues to hard, removes the opaque lipids from cells and replaces them with a clear hydrogel mesh. A follow-up detergent wash makes the bone transparent.
The team hopes the method will make it easier to test new treatments for bone disease by allowing the researchers to determine the effects of drugs sooner and more precisely.
