Ultra-Absorbent Hydrogel Dressing Saves Lives

Ultra-Absorbent Hydrogel Dressing Saves Lives
Jun-27-18
An innovative wound dressing that expands to control bleeding could save lives on the battlefields.

According to the US Army, up to 90 percent of survivable soldier deaths are due to uncontrolled bleeding. To help reduce these preventable fatalities, Army researchers are developing a plastic wound dressing made of polystyrene and rubber. The bandage will swell to form a hydrogel that fills the wound, while acrylic acid added to the material allows it to absorb up to 800 percent of its weight in liquid.

Although not the first expanding dressing, the new material is idealized for life-and-death situations, when minutes count.
