Ultra-Slim facetVISION Camera Inspired by Insects

Jan-18-17 Inspired by insect eyes, the facetVISION flat camera measures only 2 mm thick—opening the door to even slimmer smartphones.

Smartphone slimness is in part limited by camera size, which typically measure no less than 5 mm. However, the new facetVISION camera from the team at Fraunhofer boasts the slimmest profile yet, made possible by the camera’s 135 tiny lenses that each capture a different part of the subject. The images are combined to form the full picture.

While the current iteration of the facetVISION camera offers a resolution of only four megapixels, the team believes they could increase that quality to more than ten megapixel—which is suitable for use in phones.
